Getting that critical shot while under fire
Whether as a photojournalist working in a war zone, a wedding photographer dealing with relatives who won’t speak to each other, or a nature photographer stalking a poisonous reptile, photographers must know how to think outside the box while having to work within it. This workshop is co-taught by Vincent Versace, renowned digital photographer, and Mickey Strand, head of the u.s. Navy combat camera division. For the fist time outside of u.s. military training facilities, this pair is offering their combined insight and expertise at Maine Media Workshops. What are the crucial elements that have to become second nature to the photographer? What strategies can be used to get that perfect image when there is a lot else on the line? What does the ideal gear bag contain? Participants are exposed to shooting situations intended to focus the eye in new and different ways while still working within the traditional frame of the assignment. The great advantages of shooting digitally are explored along with in-depth discussions of storage, laptops, lenses, metadata and a variety of software used to create an efficient workflow. This high-intensity workshop covers a lot of ground both in the lab and in the field and also provides an energizing and inspirational experience.

Believing is Seeing

Turn ideas into reality
There is an artistic voice that is unique to each individual. A way of seeing the world that so moves us that we are compelled to photograph it for others to see. This class is about not looking but about seeing. It is a class about creating images that when viewed we believe we were there to feel what the photographer felt when he was taken by the picture. In this class we will explore the boundaries of light, gesture, color and most importantly time and how to incorporate these elements in the images we create. The focus of this class is to learn not how to take photographs but rather how to be taken by them. This class is not one that will just explore how to take technically perfect, compositionally correct, average photographs of an extraordinary subjects, but rather how to create extraordinary photographs of the world we see through the lens from the smallest things we walk by everyday and the average things we take for granted. This class is about how to see past the obvious.

Believing is Seeing
Vincent Versace
Turn ideas into reality.
Still photography doesn’t have to mean static images. In this workshop, two-time Photoshop Hall of Fame nominee Vincent Versace details his cinematic approach to evoking time and its passage in still photographic images. Through a balance of practical instruction and creative inspiration, Versace provides a wealth of practical and artistic guidance for anyone interested in digital photography. Whether looking to enrich Photoshop skills, broaden an understanding of conceptual and aesthetic principles, get a handle on lighting and theory, or simply to inject more life into one’s photographs, participants in this workshop benefit from Vincent’s unique approach to the art and craft of digital photography. Students learn to emulate, bend and refract natural light – believably replicating the most fleeting and beautiful light of all: a late afternoon beam of sunlight streaming through a window. The workshop also covers digital portrait retouching including brightening and enhancing features, creating flawless but believable skin texture, improving overall tone, color and detail to make Hollywood-quality portraits.
